Addictions From an Attachment Perspective: Do Broken Bonds and Early Trauma Lead to Addictive Behaviours? (The Bowlby Centre Monograph Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 25.95 $This outstanding book is an important collection of papers from the 2013 John Bowlby Memorial Conference by accomplished clinicians from different modalities who share their experience of working with people with different kinds of addiction. The papers bring together an in-depth understanding that addictions are a response to, and hold the pain of, broken attachments and are best treated within healthy interpersonal relationships. For a long time the person with an addiction has been seen as the problem with society being able to live in denial of the causes. These papers open up innovative and effective ways of working with people troubled by addiction from an attachment-informed perspective.Contributors: Cara Crossan, Richard Gill, Lynn Greenwood, Bob Johnson, Liz Karter, Edward Khantzian, Arlene Vetere, Kate White, Jason Wright

Freedom of Obedience : Carthusian Novice Conferences
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.14 $'The spiritual centre of the human person, the self', writes the author, 'maintains its fundamental identity for the whole of life on earth and is destined for participation in the eternal life of God... The person is not a succession of separate points at the mercy of the conditions of the moment. God has given us a share in his power as creator, and to create ourselves through our liberty, to go beyond ourselves towards absolute values'. These reflections by a Carthusian novice master for those training for the life of silent love show that in the obedience born of love, one responds to the all encompassing, deeply intimate and sustaining love of God.

Astrologies: Plurality and Diversity
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 3.05 $The Sophia Centre Press presents an anthology comprised of a selection of papers from the 'Astrologies' conference, organised by the Sophia Centre, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, and held in Bath on 24-25 July 2010. The broad range of topics explored in these papers reflects the impressive diversity of techniques and underlying philosophies infusing an enduring human perception of meaningful relationships between the heavenly bodies and life on earth. The papers are grouped into three basic themes: the symbolism of astrologies, the history of astrologies within different cultural contexts, and the practice of various astrologies from both 'insider' and 'outsider' perspectives. Although astrology has been treated in many scholarly works as a monolithic entity, all of the papers in this book demonstrate one of the paradoxes of astrological thought and practice: the existence of a relatively stable tradition of cosmological and astral representations and ideas combined with an adaptability that has enabled astrologies to meld with different spheres of human endeavour in a variety of cultures.Contributors include: Bernadette Brady, Nicholas Campion, Robert Collis, Martin Gansten, Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke, Liz Greene, Darrelyn Gunzburg, Robert Hand, Jay Johnston and Garry Phillipson.

International Entrepreneurship: Globalization of Emerging Businesses (Research in Global Strategic Management, 7)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 150.54 $The focus of this volume is the phenomenon of globalization, and specifically its relevance to and impact on small business and entrepreneurship. The works presented here stem from a pioneering, three day conference held at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, under the joint auspices of McGill's Centre for International Business Studies, and the Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies. Leading international scholars came together to begin integrating research in what had previously been from widely divergent fields. The book presents four sections covering: theoretical overviews of the emerging field of international entrepreneurship; the use of alliances and networks to facilitate the entry of small businesses into the global arena; the results of three empirically based research studies designed to better understand the market forces and managerial characteristics which appear to underlie the success of SME's in the global arena; and visionary contributions on forces which will shape the successful international firm of the future. The diversity reflected in this volume and the common thread which unites the work calls for new strategic approaches by small firms, large firms, and governments alike. This work will help readers to better understand and anticipate the dramatic changes coming, and to design appropriate corporate strategic responses.

Housing and Habitat in the Ancient Mediterranean
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 10.03 $This volume presents the outcome of the international conference 'Housing and Habitat in the Mediterranean World: responses to different environments' that celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Monash University Centre in Prato in 2011. It incorporates comparative and recent research on the housing in the Mediterranean world investigating social, cultural and environmental aspects. The topics of the contributions deal with the development and internationalisation of domestic architecture in the Mediterranean, the transformation and diffusion of different housing typologies, the implications for social interaction, and the adaptation to varying regional environments of Classical models of housing. The contributors present new archaeological data and fresh interpretations, various theories, methods and evidence to investigate the characteristics of and change in social space and dynamics in both the urban and rural environment. Rather than dealing with one discrete region or time frame, the aim of the conference and these papers is diachronic, incorporating data from around the entire region and ranging broadly across the 1st millennium BCE to Late Antiquity. In so doing, regional characteristics can be highlighted but also compared with contemporary developments throughout the region and long-term trends, both local and again regional, can be identified. The volume illustrates different priorities in the study of housing and habitat that hopefully will prove stimulating to all researchers concerned with the lived-in environment.

Autonomy and Ideology: Positioning an Avant-Garde in America
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 20.00 $This is the documentation -- transcripts, essays, and images -- of the proceedings of an influential conference held in honor of Philip Johnson. Hosted in New York City in February 1996 by the Canadian Centre for Architecture, together with the Columbia University School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation and the Museum of Modern Art, the conference was organized by Phyllis Lambert and Peter Eisenman and convened by Robert Somol. The international roster of diverse participants included historians, theorists, critics, and architects who debated such themes as the critical dynamics between museums as institutions and the material they represent; the issue of "high" and "low" in art and architecture; and the potential to expand the concept of the avant-garde within the borders of the discipline. With the intention of developing a specifically architectural discourse of the modernist avant-garde from within and from without the discipline, the participants debated the extent to which the practitioners of the avant-garde in America were interested in the formal rather than the philosophical, political, and economic underpinnings of the European movement, which to date had remained unexamined. They discussed new ways of working and thinking through the problems of modernity as it began to be experienced at the start of the 1920s.

Current Issues in Quantum Logic (Ettore Majorana International Science Series)
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 308.69 $These are the proceedings of the Workshop on Quantum Logic held in Erice (Sicily), December 2 - 9, 1979, at the Ettore Hajorana Centre for Scientific Culture. A conference of this sort was originally proposed by Giuliano Toraldo di Francia, who suggested the idea to Antonino Zichichi, and thus laid the foundation for the Workshop. To both of them we express our appreciation and thanks, also on behalf of the other participants, for having made this conference possible. There were approximately fifty participants; their names and institutions are listed in the text. Quantum logic, which has now a history of some forty or more years, has seen remarkable growth during the sixties and seventies. The papers in the present volume presuppose, by and large, some acquaintance with the elements of the subject. These may be found in the well-known books by J.H. Jauch (Foundations of Quantum Hechanics; Reading, 1968), V.S. Varadarajan (Geometry of Quantum Theory: Princeton, 1968), and C. Piron (Foundations of Quantum Theory; New York, 1976). The initial program for the conference listed about twenty-five invited papers. But in the context of a very active and qualified attendance, other contributions were offered. This volume contains all of them. The program listed six main topics: I. Classification or different areas of quantum logic, and open problems. II. Comparison and unification of different approaches to quantum theories; problems of interpretation. III. Formal quantum logic; axiomatics. IV. Hodal interpretations of quantum logic. v vi FOREWORD V. Quantum set theory.

Miracle Enough: Papers on the Works of Mervyn Peake [first edition]
Vendor: Abebooks.com Price: 64.55 $To mark the centenary of Mervyn Peake's birth, the Sussex Centre for Folklore, Fairy Tales and Fantasy (University of Chichester) organized an international conference in July 2011 entitled Mervyn Peake and the Fantasy Tradition. Papers were presented by scholars, artists, and writers from all over the world, and here we have a selection of them. No other comparable collection of essays on Peake has ever been published. The contributors take a wide variety of approaches to Peake's work - not just the Gormenghast trilogy but also his books for children, his poetry, and his art. They compare Peake with other writers, explore the world of Gormenghast, and examine his characters and his poetical prose style. Two essays approach the graphic side of Peake's ouevre: the drawings he made in the manuscripts of the Titus books, and his illustrations for Household Tales by the brothers Grimm. Introduction by William Gray, of the Sussex Centre for Folklore, Fairy Tales and Fantasy. The book is edited by G. Peter Winnington, the editor of Peake Studies and other books on Peake. The leading Peake scholar he has penned both a biography - Mervyn Peake's Vast Alchemies (Peter Owen 2009) - and a critical study - The Voice of the Heart: the working of Mervy Peake's imagination (Liverpool U P, 2006). The varied approaches taken by these papers contribute to our understanding and appreciation of Mervyn Peake's work, both as a writer and an illustrator - Joanne Harris.
